Driver Certificate of Professional Competence
The Driver CPC for LGV Drivers comes into operation on 10th September 2009. As an existing licence holder, you have “acquired” or “Grandfather” rights and will not be required to undertake the new test. However, the law requires you to undertake a total of 35 hours of “periodic training” between 10th September 2009 and September 2014. If you do not do this, you will not be able to drive for a living after that date.

How do I get my periodic training?
Only centres approved for the purpose by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training, (JAUPT), can deliver the training, and only courses approved by JAUPT count as periodic training. MPQC, formerly EPIC, is approved by JAUPT to deliver periodic training and we have a number of courses designed especially for the quarrying industry that will give you the 35 hours you need.

You can get more information, or book courses with us by;
• Calling Sam Conisbee at MPQC Head Office on 01727 869008
• Emailing her at Sam.Conisbee@mpskills.co.uk
• By speaking to an MPA member company representative, such as a Transport Manager, who may be able to arrange a course for you, If you are contracted to them.

What courses are available?
If you are reading this, you will probably have an MPQC (EPIC) Driver Skills Card and will have taken the MPQC or EPIC Site Safety Awareness and Safe Behaviour for Road Hauliers’ course to get it. This course has been approved as providing 7 hours of periodic training, so when you have to take the course again to renew your MPQC( EPIC) Driver Skills Card, it can be done as periodic training for a small additional charge .

Other courses we offer are:
Safe and Fuel Efficient Driving, (SAFED)* for Aggregates, which is a 7 hour course, and the following which are all
3½ hour courses (pending JAUPT Approval):
Drivers’ Hours and Working Time Directive
An Introduction to Digital Tachographs
Vehicle Checks and Defect Reporting
Safe Loading and Unloading of Vehicles
Dealing with Accidents and Incidents
Customer Service

If you do a 3½ hour course, you must take a second one from the list on the same day or start it within 24 hours of finishing the first one.

Do I have to take the courses in a particular order, or at particular times?
No, for periodic training purposes, you can take the courses in any order and at any time, provided that you complete 35 hours by September 2014. However, MPA’s Code of Practice for Driver Training requires you to maintain your MPQC (EPIC) Driver Skills Card, which will determine when you have to take the course for this purpose; you don’t have to take this course as part of your periodic training, but it makes sense to do so. You will have to make it clear when you book it that this is what you want to do. It is essentially the same course, except that as a periodic training course, there will be no assessment, but to obtain the Driver Skills Card, you will undertake and have to pass a multiple-choice test as you did before.

Other Centres offer Periodic Training, so why should I choose MPQC?
You will only be able to do the Driver Skills Card with us, but, of course other centres can offer a full package to meet your needs. However, all our trainers are very familiar with the industry you work in and the training courses are not “off-the-shelf” and will be relevant to what you do. You know us, and we hope you continue to choose us to deliver this very important training, whenever you choose to do it. If you have any questions, please contact our head office and we will do our best to answer them and give you the best advice we can. Don’t forget, you are not alone if you have questions – this is new to us all.
