Introduction
All Contractors operating within the quarrying industry are now expected to hold a Contractor Safety Passport. The industry is committed to reducing accidents and as contractors you play an increasingly important part in this.
Why?
The industry jointly signed with the Health and Safety Commission (HSC) a pledge to halve the number of accidents in the industry by 2005 and having successfully met and exceeded this target, the QPA launched its new five-year health and safety Hard Target for the quarrying industry and QPA Members have again pledged to reduce the incident figure by a further 50%.
What is the Contractor Safety Passport Scheme?
The industry specific scheme is part of a wider Safety Pass Alliance Scheme (which operates in other industries), which shows that you as a contractor have achieved a basic level of health and safety and environmental knowledge to work within the extractive and mineral processing industries. It is not a measure of competence in your field but a course covering health and safety and environmental awareness specific to the industry.
The scheme is designed to assist CONTRACTORS to:
Improve health, safety and environmental awareness and minimise accidents and ‘near misses’ because as a Contractor you are now part of the everyday operational life of most quarries and in most other extractive industries and as such you are at risk of being involved in an accident.
Increase productivity and efficiency as well as saving time and expense by not having to sit through repetitive health and safety induction programmes which is time to you and therefore costs you money.
The scheme is a 2 day course in basic health, safety and environmental awareness and your knowledge and understanding is tested by a series of multi-choice questions after each module. Please see 2 day course overview for further information.
On successful completion you are presented with a credit card style “Safety Passport” complete with your photograph which is valid for 3 years, thereafter only a ONE DAY REFRESHER COURSE required.
The refresher course is a one day course with the morning session updating you and refreshing your knowledge on general health and safety and environmental issues, with the afternoon session covering industry specific issues. The refresher course ensures that your knowledge of health and safety is current and relevant to the industry you are working in.
