Background to the Course
The EPIC/IEMA Environmental Management System (EMS) Implementation Course has been customised for delivery within the extractive and mineral processing sector. The course provides all the tools and information delegates require to implement and manage an EMS, in particular to the ISO14001 Standard.
Who Should Attend?
The course is intended for primarily for environmental specialists who have to implement or maintain an environmental management system to the requirements of ISO14001. The course is also suitable for managers and assistant managers in quarries and processing plants whose responsibilities require an in depth knowledge of introducing and maintaining or managing an EMS.
The course substantially covers the environmental knowledge requirements of the NVQ in Health, Safety and Environmental Management in Quarries, at levels 3, 4 and 5, although EPIC have developed two courses specifically for candidates preparing for or working towards these awards, viz., EPIC Site Environmental Management for Supervisors and EPIC Site Environmental Management for Managers.
Course Objectives
On completion of this course, the course members should:
- Be fully conversant with the key environmental impacts facing the extractives and mineral processing industries;
- Have a working knowledge and understanding of environmental legislation controlling the extractive and mineral processing sector;
- Know the reasons for implementing an Environmental Management System;
- Be able to prepare a Register of Environmental Aspects;
- Be able to identify potential legal non compliances in the workplace; and
- Be able to implement and manage the responsibilities for maintaining the EMS at their own place of work.

Course Structure and Delivery Methods
This is a three day assessed course comprising of lectures, case studies and group work and a post – course workplace project. There is also a two part assessment process, which comprises of an open-book written assessment and a workplace project.
The course is dual – certificated and those delegates attaining the required standard in the assessments will be awarded the IEMA EMS Implementation Certificate, and the EPIC Certificate of Achievement in Advanced EMS Implementation.
