Interpersonal Skills for Managers and Supervisors

Background to the Course

This course provides an introduction to managing interactively. Based on proven communications techniques, the course equips members with the basic skills to enable them to develop their approach to dealing with commonly occurring people issues and to managing day to day interactions effectively.

Who Should Attend?

This course is intended for  managers and  supervisors who have experience of  managing  people in quarries, processing and manufacturing plants in the extractive and mineral processing industries and who need to develop their people management and communication skills.  On completion of the course attendees will receive the EPIC Certificate of Training.

Course Objectives

On completion of the course, delegates will be able to:

  • Outline the importance of preparation in dealing with people issues
  • List the key principles for effective interaction between people at work
  • Distinguish between submissive, aggressive and assertive behaviour
  • Identify their own level of assertiveness
  • Deal effectively with the varying reactions of individuals under supervision
  • Select the most appropriate style of response to use in interpersonal communication
  • Give and receive criticism in a constructive way
  • Use an effective approach to making and declining requests
  • Deal with conflict before discipline becomes necessary

  • Assertive versus aggressive behaviour
  • Communication styles and techniques
  • Feedback – positive and negative
  • Saying ‘no’ without hurting
  • Dealing with conflict

Course Structure and Delivery Methods

This two-day highly interactive course uses a mix of tutorial inputs, guided discussions, role plays and case studies.  In addition, course members’ own experiences will be drawn upon to enhance the learning experience.
