Safe Entry into Confined Spaces

Background to the Course

Entering into confined spaces is a risky activity, which should only be carried out when essential installation, maintenance, repair or remedial work needs to be done, or in an emergency.   The work must always be carried out within a safe system of work or under a permit to work.  The safety of those entering confined spaces and carrying out work is paramount and it is vital that they are properly trained for the work.

This course provides the basic knowledge and practical skills to enable those carrying out the work to do so safely, and provides them with an emergency evacuation technique in the event of a life threatening incident.  This course has been specifically designed for the extractive and mineral processing industries through a collaboration between EPIC, major employers and confined spaces training experts.

Who Should Attend?

All persons who are likely to enter and work in confined spaces, and emergency rescue personnel.

Course Objectives

To provide course members with the basic knowledge necessary to understand the principles of safe entry into confined spaces and equip them with the skills required to react positively and safely in an emergency to meet the requirements of the Confined Spaces Regulations 1997

Course Content

  • Definition of a confined space
  • Hazard and precautions in extractive and mineral processing industry sites
  • Initial response and resuscitation
  • Gas detection
  • PPE and escape apparatus
  • Risk assessment, safe systems and permit to work
  • Emergency procedures and evacuation techniques

Course Structure and Delivery Methods

A two-day course combining theory and practice in a range of training methods, including short lectures, demonstrations, group discussions and case studies and practical instruction.  Course members undertake a short written test to assess their knowledge after each of the first five modules of the course and on day two, after module six, each course member engages in an assessed mock emergency team exercise to test their ability to carry out an emergency evacuation procedure.  Successful completion of the course assessments leads to the award of the EPIC Certificate of Achievement.  Due to the safety critical aspect of confined spaces entry and working, this certificate is valid for three years and reissue is dependant upon the holder’s success in a one-day Refresher course taken towards the end of the period of currency of the original certificate.
