Understanding Quarries Regulations Advanced

Background to the Course

The introduction of the Quarries Regulations 1999 was a significant and important event.This course is one of a suite of courses specifically designed to assist managers, supervisors and others working in quarries to increase their knowledge and understanding of  safety, health and environmental issues in the workplace and understand their own responsibilities for creating and maintaining a safer workplace.
The course is intended as a springboard for those responsible for implementing the regulations by familiarising them with the regulations, the Approved Code of Practice and the associated guidance, so that they will know where to look and how to interpret what they find.

Who Should Attend?

Anyone with responsibility for, or interest in, the application of the regulations.  This will include managers and supervisors, health and safety advisors, safety representatives and contractors. If doing your job well requires you to have a working knowledge of the Quarries Regulations then this course is certainly for you.

Course Objectives

By the end of the course, members should:

  • Have an appreciation of the structure of UK health and safety legislation and how the Quarries Regulations are derived from it.
  • Understand the meaning of the terms: Act, Regulations, Approved Code of Practice, (ACoP), and Guidance and their legal status.
  • Have a sound working knowledge of the structure of the Regulations, the ACOP and Guidance, 1999.
  • Be able to refer to, and interpret, specific parts of the Regulations and the ACoP.
  • Have discussed the application of the most important regulations as determined by the group.
  • Be able to navigate the Regulations and ACoP and find and understand the information they require.

The Course Content may vary depending upon the needs and background of the course members, or changes in emphasis due to current issues; however, typical content will be derived from the following:

  • Navigating the Quarries Regulations:
  • Interpretation and General Matters
  • Health and Safety Management
  • Risk Control
  • Additional Health and Safety Requirements
  • Explosives
  • Excavations and Tips
  • Duties of Employers and Participation and Duties of Persons at Work.
  • Miscellaneous and General
  • Repeals, Modifications and Revocations

Course Structure and Delivery Methods

Course delivery is tailored to course members’ requirements because we recognise that it is not possible to cover this package of legislation in detail in just two days. However our focus is first on making course members familiar with the thinking behind modern legislation and then to show them how to navigate the ACOP so that they become familiar with its structure and outline content, thus enabling them to use it with relative ease.
A two-day course, consisting of short lectures, discussions, and group exercises and . On completion, course members are awarded the EPIC Certificate of Training Achievement.
