Understanding SHE Committees

Background to the Course

This course has been developed to provide an overview of the function and purpose of Safety, Health and Environmental (SHE) Committees and their effectiveness in contributing to improving overall health and safety on sites
 
Who should attend?

The course is aimed at all those people within the organisation who require an overview of the role of SHE Committees.

Course Objectives

The main aims of the course are to provide course members with an understanding and awareness of the requirements for SHE committees, including the role of safety representatives, and safety committees, to enable course members to appreciate the function and structure of SHE committee meetings as a forum for promoting health and safety in the workplace, and to give course members a working knowledge of policies and guidance
 
By the end of the course, members will:

  • have a basic appreciation  of the legislation relevant to safety representatives and safety committees
  • understand the role of the members of SHE committees, including safety representatives
  • understand the role and functions of a SHE committee
  • recognise and identify with the key activities of SHE committee members
  • understand the requirements for, and types of, workplace inspections
  • participate in the development of a site wide promotional campaign
  • appreciate the benefits of effective meetings
  • be aware of the structure and format of formal meetings
  • be able to recognise the importance of an agenda and action points
  • know how to deal with problem situations and people
  • have taken part in a mock SHE committee meeting

  • the function and purpose of SHE committees
  • Legislation
  • members of the Committee and their roles
  • the Safety Representative
  • policies and guidance
  • meetings and participation
  • the structure and format of meetings
  • roles and relationships

Course Structure and Delivery Methods

This course is highly participative and involves tutorial inputs, group discussion and exercises. On completion of this one day course The EPIC Certificate of Training is awarded.
